What types of grapes are best to grow in SE Michigan?
Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on
I want to start growing grapes and I was wondering which variety is best for my region.
For anything to do with agriculture I suggest looking for information through Michigan State University Extension (MSUE)
Try reading this http://web1.msue.msu.edu/fruit/grape.htm
Your County Master Gardener extension site may also have information

is it too late to cut back my grape vine?
Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on
I forgot to do it at the end of summer and I was wondering if anyone had a suggestion? The vine is 4 years old now and produces a lot of fruit – although the grapes are still quite small. Thank you.
The best time to prune your 4 year old grape vine is after autumn, beginning of winter, when it is dormant. I found a site that will help.

What is the religious and mythical symbolism for grapes?
Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on February 20, 2010
I bought an antique silver ring, and in it is this intriguing imprint of some grapes and a thin, wavy vine. It’s very pretty. It’s pretty old, so I was curious, what are the symbolic meanings both religiously and in mythology, for grapes? Sources or websites would be nice, thanks!
Maybe the Greek God of wine Dionysus? Grapes would be one of his symbols.
How to grow grape vine?

I bought a grape vine (red grapes), but I am not sure how to construct the trellis support structure… Ideas? Links? – thanks!
Do a google search for how to build a grape trellis, or grape trellis construction. Also, your local library has garden construction and landscaping books. Also, go to Lowes of Home Depot and look in their book section to get some ideas. You might get the books cheaper off of AMazon.com.
On youtube, look up grape vine or arbor or vine growing

How do I make wine out of non-alcoholic wine?
Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on
I live in Kuwait and want to make wine (with alcohol) out of non-alcoholic wine. I heard I can just add yeast (or yeast and sugar). Does anyone have experience with trying this?
I know I can make wine out of grape juice but want to try it with non-alcoholic wine so it has more flavor and body.
Any help would be appreciated.
First, check the ingredients. If it contains any preservative, don’t waste your time. If not, add sugar and a yeast such as Montrachet.
If you want more flavor and body from juice, you may be able to do this by adding concentrate or frozen juice to your grape juice.
why are my grapes not growing fully and are already turning red?

the plants are 3 years old and are quite big but the fruit is not growing very well
It can take several years before your vines produce good grapes. At this age, your root structure is really working hard at getting established and will short itself on fruiting to devote its energy towards roots. Further, to get good grape yield, for the next few years you will probably need to select which bunches on grapes you want to grow and cut off the rest at an early age. Then the plant can put more energy into fewer bunches. The pros learn how to prune so that the bunches get optimum sun.
Unless you are a commercial grower, you may not get those lovely bunches of grapes we see in the store. However, within the next few years, you will see more and more success and get some pretty darn good grapes.
what wine do you use to make beef wellington?
Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on February 19, 2010
what kind of merlot, wine, sherry is used to make beef wellington?
someone else is cooking it and asked me to buy the wine so not sure what kind to buy she said a merlot? which type of merlot would go good in there?
need brand name and cost details as well as which grocery store.
A full bodied dry red wine, such as cabernet sauvignon or a bordeaux are both great choices for beef weelington. Use the wine to deglaze the juices from the bottom of the pan after you have sauteed the meat. Once you have placed the meat on the puff pastry, pour the juices on to the beef wellington and pour the sauce on top of the meat prior to adding the pate on top of the meat. Use a good red wine and serve the same red wine with dinner.
What is the chemical in grapes/raisins and plums/prunes that would cause an allergic reaction?
Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on
My next-door neighbor has a little 2-YO boy who is allergic to grapes and raisins, plums and prunes. They cause his face to swell up. Is there a specific chemical in these fruits that would cause this?
wow, plums raisins, grapes, and prunes……
that cannot be, thats impossible surely.
i have had a horrendous time over the past few years. my body seemed to be rejecting all the things i ate as a child.
i couldn’t drink wine, nor certain herbal teas, no salt, no water, i was in a mess, and no nuts….
i have just spent the last 18months learning to feed myself.
i’m a christian and i have been extremely careful in prayer and worship/devotion to God.
i have won my body back, i now eat those things you mention, though at first i was scared to.
when i ate them my body did not respond like it used to, but i think because i was eating meat and fruit juices no water but wine with food and seed and nuts for snacks, following the dietary advice in the new testament saved my neck. The transission was so much easier, and painless though unusual, i had to be careful…. Jesus Saves, i as a christian really did take my struggle as a battle against the dark forces of Wickedness/Evil.
Unusual ailments deserve praying over, our bodies were made to consume fruits and grains, meats etc. The bible says so.
The only dietary advice i took from the old testament was on self control, Honey Butter and Milk(preferrably Goats milk).
Teachings on healthy living are not ot be ignored. They are extremely serious and some though frightening are very accurate.
Jamie olivers show on anti-processed food is a life saver, it really is.
my parents and our church have extremely strict health laws, we were brought up to be well read and practical.
I conquered my problems with food i could not eat by buying organic.
i started again, went back to the beginning and thought to purify my body.
Natural food and no ‘E’ numbers… None.
I ate food only with ingredients i could understand and spell.
i even refused fruit juice made with asorbic acid, which i think is for preservation. it made a world of difference.
Also Organic whole milk which is vastly superior to the now adulterated kind. Organic milk is superior in taste and the health benefits are its purity.
Honey daily and Rosemary tea brewed in half and half milk and taken with brown sugar and honey and a touch of creamis essential and a healer also. My mother used to make it, she was a nurse and an angel in the kitchen.
i found rosemary tea boiled neat without milky water to be risky.
Natural as possible and reading up on the organic argument is essential. it should not be a problem for your boy to consume natural esspecially organic foods, they are essential and there purity is what makes them perfect for human consumption. there is a difference not just in organics incredibe taste but in there make up.
as i am not ricvh i focussed on the core foods to be on my organic list, and occassionally bought others organically as i could afford….
Onions-Garlic-Tomatoes-Herbs-eggs and Some other Veg’s ….
i found pressed orange and pineapple juice which was only pasturised(organic was exspensive for me), i bought occassionally organic meats, some were not too different i price, i found wild salmon vastly superior to plain cheap salmon, chicken was escellent, but all the meats were very good, i am not a pork eater but as i got healthier i did try and it was good, but not for me, not on a regular basis.
Wine wih everymeal, a small glass in the morning and heathier glass in the evening.
i found tomatoes briliant and a healer, and cream also.
i stuck to olive oil and used it as body lotion, my hair is so soft nowm my beard and on my hed and m y skin feels fab as i loofer too.
this is personal experience, i hope it helps, it helped me, but Jesus saves, tis true, i am a christian too.
but these foods are healers and the natural way is the way, the books all say… i hope things are not too bad for you, i dont want you to be a guinea pig.
blessings.
