If wine is made just by smashing grapes then why?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on April 30, 2010

don’t we get drunk if the grape juice in the store? Do they let wine sit out longer? I was watching this video and they didn’t add anything to the wine. Is grape juice in the store fake juice? What is up with that?

The grape juice is fermented by yeast, alcohol is a byproduct of yeast (it eats the sugars in the juice and poops out alcohol basically); so no yeast, no alcohol

How do I re-establish grape vines?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

We recently moved into a house that has been used as a business for the past 20-25 years. We are in the process of turning it back to a home. The property backs onto a small tributary of a local river (read – almost non-existant at this point, but lots of swampy/ woodsy vegetaition.) Last fall we cut back a lot of vines and what we thought were weeds, and laid down mulch to make flower beds. This spring, we’ve noticed that some of the vines are gowing leaves that look like grape leaves (and we’ve even noted what looks like tiny grape clusters). Our neighbors mentioned that the family who used to live in the house before it was a business were avid gardeners and did in fact grow grapes. So I’m guessing that what I’m seeing are edible grapes, but they’ve been cut down to the quick. No trellises, and the vines look like roots that are coming right from the ground. How do I re-establish them? Do I need to trellis them yet? Should I prune off the grape bunches to encourage the vine to grow?

It is quite likely that you have some wild grapes growing here. The tiny grape clusters sound like it. Check the links here, they may look familiar to you. Let them grow for a while and find out what you have. You might be better off starting your grapes off of some new rooted cuttings from grapes you know are good.

How do u make wine in less than 5 days?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

or at least how long is the shortest time to make wine

You can make mead–honey wine–in five days. It definitely tastes better if you age it, but you can drink it after five days. Here’s what you do:
Put 3 lbs of honey into a large pot with a gallon of bottled water and two tea bags. Heat it gently for a couple of hours, then let it cool to about 95 degrees (not quite hot enough to hurt if you touch it). While it’s cooling, put a packet of baker’s yeast into a little bit of warm water and mix it up with a fork. Make sure there aren’t any clumps. Let it sit a few minutes, then add it to the cooled honey/water mix. Let it rest a few hours to give the yeast a head start, then pour it into a couple of old wine bottles and rubber band papertowel or cheese cloth over the top. Then, let it sit. In five days there will be plenty of alcohol in it.
I will stress again, mead tastes better after it’s aged (at least six months). But it can be consumed immediately.

When is it favorable in the signs to plant tomatoes?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

tomatoes I plant here always get just about the size of grapes and just stand there all season as green as grass. Still small and green when frost kills them in the fall.

Where is here? cold/hot. SOIL SAMPLE will be the 1st thing you do, county extension will help, start your own seed early, 8 to 10 wks. plants should be 12 to 16 "s you will have to replant in pots 2 to 3 times (larger),plant, full sun, night time temp. above 60, water at base and feed every 2 to 3 wks. ps/ use cold weather seed, 60 to 65 day,if growing season short/northern clim. is it posible when i make wine from grapes contain cores, make methanol <CH3OH >or not?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on April 29, 2010

specially when i make big grapes have alot of cores.you know methanol can make persons blind.

most alcoholic drinks have a small amount of methanol, but not any significant amount, unless you are distilling it, which will conecentrate the alcohol, which is why people that distll actually remove the 1st run to be safe.

if you are worried, seed the grapes before making your wine, but honestly, you will generally get more methanol from grain the fruit bases.

Pruning Grape vines?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

Hi,

My husband and I just bought a home with a couple mature (50+ years old) grapevines. Neither of us are green thumbs by any measure.

Can anybody tell us in layman’s terms when and how to prune them?

Oh, and we don’t know the variety. However, they are red, seeded and very very sweet!

Thanks!

Sounds like maybe a Clinton variety. In the spring before they leaf out, you can cut them back and tie them to the trellis or wire supporting them. If this hasn’t been done recently, you will end up with a lot of cut vine. New vines will grow and fill in open spaces. We ususally use willow to tie them up, but any twine or string will work. Don’t worry about cutting too much, just leave the main thicker vines and you should be fine.

Does any body know how to make wine?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

Cause I know how. But I was wondering if i have to boil it to get rid of germs. Right now I drink it straight.

No you don’t have to boil it. The act of fermentation will sterilise the wine of any harmful germs.

Any news on if Andrew Bynum can return in the NBA 2008 playoffs?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

Anyone hear anything? I heard that Phil Jackson’s says his return this season is remote but he’s changed his statement many times about Bynum. If the Lakers keep advancing that would give him another month or so. But anyone hear ANYTHING from the grape vine?

idk they said that he may comeback in the Western Conference Finals(if they make it there),but i doubt it.

We have 20 pounds of concord grapes. What do we need to add to make grape wine?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

My husband says yeast and sugar. Somebody told him just sugar.

The correct way would be to use a yeast specifically made for fermenting wine. These yeast will be able to survive through the process to yield a final product with 13-14% ABV, whereas random yeast usually will die well before that leaving a sweet wine rather than a dry wine, assuming it would even be drinkable.
