Yes, you are right.

Of the white wine grape varietals, which are you favorite, and can you recommend a good vintner or producer..?

… of each?

I am currently quite fond of Pinot Grigio and Gewürztraminer … but I love trying out different wines from all regions in both white and red, but I am learning more about whites as it is coming upon summertime where I reside.

There are some great white varietals.

Personal favorite is Sauvignon Blanc, which is a fruity not-so-sweet wine that is great by itself or with seafood. Suavignon Blanc and sushi is the best. The best Sauvignon Blanc in the market is Caymus Conundrum, which is actually a blend but primarily Sauvignon Blanc based. At $25 per bottle, it is pricier than others. You can get some cheaper ones, including Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc, Duckhorn Sauvognon Blanc, most of those $14-20. New Zealand also has wonderful Sauvignon Blanc.

Other favorite include Viognair, which is a small floral wine similar to Sauvignon Blanc. They tend to be cheaper than Sauvignon Blanc and offer an interest contrast. Pride makes the best Viognair, at $35 each.

Gwertztreminer and Reisling are a bit sweet for meto drink all the time, but for the right occasion, they are fun wines. Gwertztreminer is a bargain, since you can pick up some of those wine under $10 and work great for dessert. Reisling has various type, some sweeter and others not. The best way to look is to see the alcohol content – the higher alcohol, the less sweet. Germans have a system to tell that as well. There are Reisling produced from California to East Coast to France Alsace to Germany and others. They can run anywhere from $10 to $100.

Pinot Grigio is a dry wine more popular from Italy and Chile. They are everyday cheap dry white wine. I found a few treasures Pinot Grigio from US, however, including Alexana from Oregan. Chardonnay in California tend to be too dry and too oaky, especially the cheaper ones.

One last unusual white wine to mention is a dry Muscato. Muscato tend to be a sweet wine similar to Gwertztreimer, but there is one from Napa that is dry and floral and not sweet, called La Sirena Muscato Azure, which at $35 is one of the most unusual white wine on the market and a personal favorite.

Why is red wine more beneficial than red grape juice?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

All of the time, you hear about the health benefits of red wine. But why is it so much better than red grape juice? The only difference is the fermentation process, but if the beneficial flavanoids and reservatrol is present in the raw grapes, it doesn’t seem that the fermentation process is necessary.

Can anyone explain this to me?
Well I wonder why red wine gets all of the publicity then? It’s almost like the wineries and vineyards are behind this. Or perhaps it is because scientists are just overly eager to find a link between the health of southern French residents and their diet?

Welch asked that same question. So they commissioned a study. The results: Red wine and Red grape juice are equally good for you. Just not the white wine/juice.

What does Dennis Lee mean in Chinese?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

the English meaning is ‘follower of the goddess of wine: Dionysus’ which interprets as the the follower of spring since Dionysus represents spring (or wine), the season when the grapes grow.
I’ve heard there is a Chinese version of the name which translates as ‘red nun’. is this correct, and if so what does this mean? If this is incorrect please provide the correct meaning.
Thanks for that.
Why are there so many "Dennis Lee" (s) ?

When translating English names to Chinese, we do not translate it according to the meaning but pronunciation. Therefore, Dennis Lee would be 丹尼斯 . 李 (dan ni si . li).

Those characters are not picked for their meaning but for the way they sound when they are read, which closely resembles Dennis Lee.

Isaiah 5:1-7 ? song of the vineyard?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on May 30, 2010

1 I will sing for the one I love
a song about his vineyard:
My loved one had a vineyard
on a fertile hillside.
2 He dug it up and cleared it of stones
and planted it with the choicest vines.
He built a watchtower in it
and cut out a winepress as well.
Then he looked for a crop of good grapes,
but it yielded only bad fruit.

3 "Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and men of Judah,
judge between me and my vineyard.

4 What more could have been done for my vineyard
than I have done for it?
When I looked for good grapes,
why did it yield only bad?

5 Now I will tell you
what I am going to do to my vineyard:
I will take away its hedge,
and it will be destroyed;
I will break down its wall,
and it will be trampled.

6 I will make it a wasteland,
neither pruned nor cultivated,
and briers and thorns will grow there.
I will command the clouds
not to rain on it."

7 The vineyard of the LORD Almighty
is the house of Israel,
and the men of Judah
are the garden of his delight.
And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed;
for righteousness, but heard cries of distress.

what do the vines represent?
thanks

Its God talking about his chosen nation Israel and how badly the whole thing turned out.

Are golden raisins made from white grapes?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

I know white grapes=white wine, but when it comes to raisins I’m a bit clueless.

Like natural seedless raisins, these are Thompson Seedless grapes, but are oven-dried to avoid the darkening effect of sunlight. They are also treated with sulfur dioxide to preserve the light color. The best seedless green grapes are quickly dried to keep their golden color and fine flavor.

How long should it take for homemade Red Grape wine to clarify naturally? What colour after fermenting?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

The secondary fermetation looks like it’s just finishing and is ready to be racked for the second time. Been about 22-24 days since starting. I used a Red Wine concentrate but am trying to stay away from Clarifiers if at all possible. Right now the colour is a bluish purple and I tried to shine a flashlight through but can’t seen a smidge of light. Do I need to be more patient and how long?

Remember, in your fermenter (even if you’re using something as small as a gallon jug) contains a lot more volume than a bottle or a glass. Your brew will always appear much darker in the fermenter than in a smaller container. If you want to get a representative view of the color as compared to a commercial wine, a handy trick is to set aside a small amount in a glass when you’re racking. Let it siphon out into your sample glass for a few seconds before putting the tube into the large container. This way, you’re looking at it as you would another wine so it’s not deceptively dark.

Still, with wine, patience is not going to do you wrong. Even so, you still need to taste and test samples each time you rack. You need to check your specific gravity to make sure that the fermentation is progressing. You need to taste it to see if it’s to your sweetness/dryness liking (and the sample you set aside to see the color will serve for that purpose, too).

You’ll be amazed how clear it looks when it’s in a glass as compared to in the fermenter. Compare it to looking at a piece of flat glass. Notice how it’s crystal clear looking through the flat side, but when you look through the edge, it’s green. The thicker something is that you’re looking through, the darker it is due to whatever is in it that contributes color. However, when you have your wine in a glass, you can see the color as it would normally appear. Also, because more light gets through, you can tell better if there’s any sediment that still needs to settle, or if it’s clear enough to bottle.

If you only grow seedless grapes… then how do you maintain your crop for years to come?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

if there are no seeds what happens if the crop dies, are you have a bad season. how do you start off growing them again?

Grape breeders create new seedless plants by placing the pollen of a seedless grape onto the flowers of a grape variety that has seeds. They then cut open and inspect the fruit of every single plant that grows from this match. The breeders are looking for seeds — some plants will have seeds in their fruit and others won’t.

When they find a plant that has no seeds, or maybe just has very tiny traces of seeds that you wouldn’t be able to taste, the grape breeders use it to make more seedless plants. One way is to cut off small pieces of the seedless plant’s vine and place it in special growing conditions in a greenhouse. Eventually, the pieces of vine will grow roots and become new, individual plants. This technique is called propagation.

Or, the breeders can graft, or attach, a piece of the seedless grape variety onto a healthy vine base, called a rootstock. Think of it like this: When someone cuts their hand, a doctor sews the cut together, and the two pieces heal as one. The grafted vines grow together the same way. And, the grape variety attached to the rootstock keeps producing delicious seedless grapes.

if white wine is made from grapes, why it has other flavor in it?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on May 29, 2010

I mean does the company put fruits into the white wine as well?

No. Wine is a complex mixture. Some of the flavor comes directly from the grapes; different varieties have different flavors. Some is the result of the weather and the soil where the grapes were grown (terroir). Yet another factor is the yeast used. Finally, the techniques used in making the wine affect the flavor. That’s why wine can be sooooo good.

Can eating red grapes give the same health benefits as drinking red wine?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on

There are very little health benefits to red wine overall that you cannot get from just plan grape juice… Yes, red wine has higher resveratrol levels, but that theory pretty much has been discarded. Meaning, metformin has a much better chance at mimicking calorie restriction gene transcription than resveratrol will ever have…

In short… Red wine has anti-oxidants… So do grapes…
