can drinking red wine turn your poop black?

Posted in: Grape Growing by admin on June 22, 2010

I have been drinking red wine for the last few days, a new winery opened near my home and have some very good flavored red wine (grape flavor) anyway, I noticed yesterday and today my initial bowel movement of the day was black with green tinge. Is this from the dye?

It is not due to the red wine but the alcohol in the wine. Any alcoholic drink will cause the pancreas to increase bile output. This greenish digestive fluid turns the stool deep brown to black and contributes along with reduced hydration to a tar-like consistency of the stool.

Never heard of that effect from wine, but I guess it could be.

It is possible, but here’s a query: does your bowel movement have a tar-like consistency? If it does, you could have some old internal bleeding.

If the wine was grape flavored then it would turn your stools purple.
